Zee landed on Reuben’s drive just as Newton was getting out of his car, and he regretted startling him.

Newton backed against the car. “Bloody hell! I thought I was about to be attacked!”

“Sorry, Newton. Good timing, though. I can come in with you.”

Newton looked at him suspiciously as he folded his wings away and pulled his t-shirt on. “What are you doing here?”

“Avery called Eli to help with Briar, and I thought I’d see what’s going on here.”

Newton froze. “Briar? What’s wrong with her?”

Shit. “You didn’t know? She was attacked by Mariah. She’s unconscious, but she’ll be okay.”

“Unconscious!” Newton floundered, and looked as if he was about to get back in his car. “Where is she?”

Zee had forgotten how much Newton liked Briar. It must sting, with Hunter being here. “She’s at El’s flat and she’s safe. Avery, Hunter, and Eli are there, too. She’s in good hands.”

For a second, it seemed Newton had got his emotions under control, but then he let fly. “Fuck it! Bastard! Shit!” He kicked his car tyre several times, then paced across the gravel, yelling more obscenities at the sky. “Is it that bloody wolf’s fault?”

“No. It is solely Mariah’s fault.”

“I’ll wring her fucking neck!”

Zee perched on the low stone wall that edged Reuben’s sweeping steps and folded his arms across his chest, prepared to listen. He liked Newton. They’d chatted about football while Newton sat at the bar some nights, and right now, he was a man with a lot on his mind, and he looked exhausted as well.

Newton continued to pace. “I need to question Mariah, and find the others! I need to stop them all!”

“We need to, not just you. You have a whole team. And you can’t find them now. It’s some stupid time of the morning, and Mariah won’t talk yet.”

“If anything happens to Briar…”

“Don’t worry about Briar.”

“Don’t tell me what I should do!” Newton snapped, rounding on him. “Briar is hurt, and there’s a bloody witch in Reuben’s cellar! Kidnapped, to boot! What am I supposed to do about that?”

“Nothing. You have your side of the investigation, and we have ours.” Zee had no idea at what point the problem had become ours. Ever since he’d offered an exhausted Avery his support, he guessed.

“Kidnapping is still kidnapping, no matter that she has killed people and injured Briar!”

“And where exactly are you going to lock her up, Newton?”

Newton glared at him. “Stop being so bloody logical!”

“Why are you even here? You shouldn’t be. Don’t get involved in this side of things.”

“I’m leading the sodding investigation!”

“The police half. Do you trust Alex and Reuben?”

“Of course I do!” Newton looked at him like he’d grown two heads.

“Then you know they’ll keep Mariah safe. They won’t abuse her or torture her.”

“I know they won’t! They’re not monsters!”

“Exactly. I would imagine they’re both freaking out right now. You raging in there won’t help.”

Newton looked as if the will to live was leaching out of him, and he sank onto the gravel and leaned against his car.
